IELTS and Cambridge exam preparation in the UK

Exam preparation courses teach two things at once: the English you need and the format of the test you are sitting. We prepare learners for IELTS and for Cambridge English Qualifications, including B2 First, and we tie preparation to your CEFR level so you know how far you are from your target before you start.

Preparation supports your target score or grade. It does not guarantee one, and we will tell you honestly if the timeline you have in mind is unrealistic.

What exam preparation actually covers

A prep course breaks the exam into its parts and trains each one. You learn question types, timing, and the traps that cost marks, then you practise under exam conditions so the real thing is not the first time you try it.

Underneath that sits the English itself: range of vocabulary, grammatical control and the ability to organise an argument. Format training without language work only gets you so far. We do both.

Format training

Question types, timing, marking logic and the wording that trips candidates up, practised with real exam papers.

Language work underneath

Vocabulary range, grammar control and structured argument, so your answers hold up beyond the rehearsal.

IELTS: academic and general training

IELTS is an international English testing system used for study and migration aims, and it has distinct academic and general training formats. The version you need depends on your goal, not on your preference, so check the requirement before you book anything.

Academic format

The academic format leans on formal reading and writing tasks suited to university study.

General training format

General training leans toward everyday and workplace contexts.

Both test listening and speaking, and both reward organised, accurate English over memorised phrases.

Cambridge English: B2 First and the wider suite

Cambridge English Qualifications are a major exam route in UK adult English study, widely used for study, work and migration-related goals. B2 First sits at upper-intermediate level and is often treated as a benchmark of work or study readiness.

The suite runs across levels, so your CEFR stage points to the qualification that fits. If you are not yet at B2, preparing for B2 First usually means raising your general English first, then adding exam work.

Where preparation meets academic English

English for Academic Purposes and exam preparation overlap heavily. Academic writing, lecture listening, note-taking and seminar speaking all appear in some form in university-focused tests.

If your goal is a UK university place, tell us. We will shape your preparation around the academic skills you will actually use, not only the test paper.

  • Academic writing: structured essays, reports and arguments under timed conditions.

  • Lecture listening and note-taking: varied native accents at real speaking speed.

  • Seminar speaking: defending a position, interrupting politely, and summarising.

How we judge whether you are ready

We start from your assessed CEFR level and look at all four skills. Then we compare that with what your target exam typically asks for and how long you have. From there we set a realistic preparation plan.

If the gap is large, we will say so and suggest a longer route through General English first. It is better to hear that at the enquiry stage than after a disappointing result.

  1. Step 1

    Assessed level

We establish where you are against CEFR, across reading, writing, listening and speaking.

  2. Step 2

    Target comparison

We compare your level with what your chosen exam typically asks for at the band or grade you need.

  3. Step 3

    Realistic plan

We set a preparation timeline that fits your test date, or advise when to book one.

Ask if you are ready and we will answer plainly, including when the answer is that you need more time first.

Class format and practice conditions

Preparation runs in small groups with regular timed practice. You sit full or partial papers under exam conditions, then review what went wrong and why. Speaking practice is done in exam format, with the same kind of prompts and timing.

Expect homework. Improvement in exam English comes mostly from the work between lessons: reading speed, timed writing, and listening to varied accents.

What a preparation week looks like

Small-group lessons

Format work and language work together, with the exam paper as the spine of the lesson.

Timed practice papers

Full papers or single sections, sat to the clock, then marked and reviewed line by line.

Speaking in exam format

Exam-style prompts and timing, so the two-minute long turn is not a surprise.

Work between lessons

Reading speed, timed writing and listening across different accents.

Scheduling around a test date

You already have a date

Enrol with enough runway to cover the syllabus and sit at least a few full practice papers.

You are months away

Split the time between general English first and exam work later, so the format work lands on a stable level.

You have no date yet

We can work backwards from your target and suggest when to book.

Cramming format knowledge in the final weeks rarely lifts a score on its own.

Common questions

Before you register

Four questions we are asked most often. If yours is not here, ask it directly and we will answer it before you commit to anything.

Ask if you are ready

Do I need IELTS, Cambridge, or another exam?

It depends on where you are applying. IELTS is common for study and migration aims and has academic and general training formats. Cambridge English Qualifications, including B2 First, are widely used for work and study readiness. Check the exact requirement for your course or application.

Can a preparation course guarantee my target score?

No. Preparation teaches format, timing and the underlying English, and that supports your target score or grade. The result depends on your starting level, the time you give to study and how you perform on the day.

How long does exam preparation take?

It depends on the distance between your current level and the target. A learner already near the required band usually needs a shorter run of focused prep. A large gap needs general English first, which takes longer.

Is academic English the same as IELTS preparation?

They overlap but are not identical. Academic English covers writing, lecture listening, note-taking and presentations for university study. IELTS preparation trains the specific test format as well.
